Contemporary Classical Music

A Personal Exploration of Contemporary Composers

By Marc Bollansee

Contemporary classical music is not a style; it is a landscape.
It is a field of experimentation, risk, invention, and sometimes contradiction.
It is where tradition is questioned, technology is embraced, and new languages of sound emerge.

This project is an independent, ongoing survey of composers working in the present era.
Its purpose is neither ranking nor promotion, but understanding, identifying voices that contribute something distinctive, necessary, or visionary to the evolving musical world.

The selections presented here are based on direct listening, long-term observation, and, in many cases, personal exchanges with the composers themselves. The emphasis is on originality of thought, structural imagination, and the capacity of music to generate an emotional or intellectual trigger.

In a time where accessibility, algorithms, and artificial generation increasingly influence creation, this project asks a simple but demanding question:

What defines true contemporary musical authorship today?

The composers featured are not grouped by school or popularity. They are united by one criterion alone:
the presence of a recognisable and compelling artistic identity.

This work is intended for listeners, composers, performers, and curious minds who wish to navigate the vast and often fragmented terrain of present-day classical composition with clarity and independence.

“This is the kind of orientation contemporary music actually needs: a living map built from deep listening, with the intellectual honesty to make real distinctions. I’m glad it exists.

“Marc Bollansee has created a site for New Music as a labor of love. This site not only allows one to read about the various CV details but also has an extensive musical information about the composers, information which lays out what is specific to each composer, and so allows one to navigate the terrain equipped with a sense of where each composer is located in the contemporary landscape.”

Chaya Czernowin

“This database is unique and immensely valuable for anyone seeking information about contemporary music works and today’s composers. Thank you for bringing together this information with such rigor and dedication.”

Gabriela Ortiz

“Your project creates a rare kind of musical cartography — one that does not simply document composers, but helps reveal the emotional, aesthetic, and intellectual constellations between them. It invites listeners to navigate contemporary music not through hierarchy, but through curiosity, resonance, and deeper listening.”
